A partnership between UNEP, WHO and the Africa Institute, the Chemicals Observatory project aims to build capacity in setting up integrated health and environment observatory surveillance and information management systems in Africa, in order to establish evidence based policies, and make sustainable decisions on sound management of chemicals and related disease burdens.
Learn MoreTwo calculators have been developed under the ChemObs project to assist in prioritizing interventions in contaminated areas. They can be freely downloaded along with associated guidance.
This calculator estimates adverse health outcomes (DALYs, IQ decrements) and associated economic costs resulting from chemicals exposure. The model accepts different types of data inputs, including environmental and biological sampling data, as well as more general information about chemicals use or distribution.
ExploreThe purpose of this calculator is to assist in determining which sites/sources of chemical pollution to prioritise for risk reduction activities. It uses site-level data and MapX to calculate relative risk for different chemical pollutants, both at a point source and more diffuse pollution.
ExploreThe Chemicals Observatory project has been developed to address the necessary improvements to be made in the fields of awareness, knowledge, information management and communication on the sound management of chemicals in Africa. The observatory currently supports five countries in applying evidence-based decision making to policy and reporting, and progressive development will provide an opportunity to further expand human and institutional capacities.
Learn moreThe project aims to enable countries to meet their reporting obligations under the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, and thus Sustainable Development Goal 12.4.1; Promote evidence based policy making; and increase investment on chemical and waste infrastructure.
About ChemObsThis platform is a venue for distribution of information on the ChemObs project for beneficiaries and stakeholders. It provides a robust resource library of information on the project, including guidance on the decision making tools, progress updates, results from the calculations, and spatial data associated with the five target countries.
ExploreThe Observatory intends to facilitate the link between diverse sources of information in scientific areas of health and environmental relevance related to chemicals and hazardous waste management throughout their life cycle. It will ensure the integration of policy analysis, data and indicators to expand the base of chemicals information not only on their effects on the health and environmental, but also on their production, processes, use, transport and disposal.
Learn moreThe observatory focuses on chemicals controlled under the Basel, Rotterdam, Stockholm and Minamata Conventions and Montreal Protocol as well as those identified as priorities under SAICM, with a view to prevent the exposure of humans and the environment to harmful chemicals and waste of global importance, through a significant reduction in the production, processes, use, consumption and emissions/releases of those chemicals and hazardous wastes.
